Ubisoft Barcelona has made 51 employees redundant. Reports indicate that the majority of those affected had been heavily involved in the development of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag’s remake. Despite Ubisoft acknowledging strong pre-order and launch figures for the game, the decision to lay off staff was made on the same day as its release. Within the studio, there is a prevailing sentiment that these layoffs were planned well in advance, making the past overtime and hard work on Assassin's Creed: Black Flag’s remake seem particularly ironic. Without any long-term projects assigned to the team by Ubisoft beyond Assassin's Creed: Black Flag’s remake, the outcome was considered inevitable regardless of the game's commercial success.
An anonymous employee impacted by the layoffs stated that the dismissals are deeply connected to ongoing workplace issues and are not isolated incidents. This individual suggested that the layoffs are symptomatic of Ubisoft's persistent unfair practices and talent attrition. Furthermore, a growing concern is the increasingly top-down management style, which significantly diminishes employees' agency.
In response to the layoffs, the Barcelona studio cancelled its usual post-launch celebrations, opting instead for an internal, low-key gathering. To protest the redundancies, remaining Ubisoft Barcelona employees, in coordination with their union, have scheduled a strike. The industrial action is slated to take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoons, between June 30th and July 16th.
